Travel writing competition

I must admit, I love competitions. I think it stems from the fact that I used to enter them a lot when I was younger. I was lucky enough to win four English competitions in the six years that I was at high school. So that gave me a taste for winning! More importantly, it helped me hone my craft.

So I was very pleased to receiving some information this week on a Travel Writing competition being held by Adventure Publishing, World Expeditions and Northern Territory Tourism. Here is some information from the organisers:

Their blurb says:

The Adventure Journal 07 is a new, high quality Australian publication brimming with inspiratial adventure stories and the people behind them. To celebrate the launch, we’re conducting a special writing competition for aspiring writers. The winning entry will be published in the first issue of this exciting new magazine in April 2007.

First prize is an eight-day walking trip on the Larapinta Trail (including airfares), trekking the high ridgelines of the West MacDonnell Ranges courtesy of World Expeditions and Northern Territory Tourism. Total prize value over $2200.

Six runners-up will each win a Viper Tent worth $259 from Explore Planet Earth.

HOW TO ENTER
1. Email your entries to admin@adventurepublishing.com.au before 30 December 2006.
2. Stories must be original and unpublished.
3. Entries must be between 1100 and 1200 words (maximum of two entries per person).
4. The subject of your non-fiction story can be any aspect of the outdoors, adventure or adventure travel anywhere in the world. Craft your experiences into a compelling, funny or touching first-person narrative. We’re not just looking for conventional topics and treatment, but unusual or emotional stories – something different!
5. Judging will be conducted by an independent, experienced panel of judges.
6. A selection of the winning entries will be published in the Adventure Journal 07.
Competition ends 30 December 2006. Winners will be announced 30 January 2007. Entrants must be Australian or New Zealand residents.
