It's time for the Australian Women's Weekly short story competition again. This competition - which was held for the first time last year in conjunction with Penguin Books - is open to creative writers around the country.
I encourage all creative writers to enter short story competitions like this one. There's nothing like a deadline to get you motivated. More importantly, it gives you a reason to write. And you know that someone is going to read your story - it's not just going to be relegated to your bottom drawer.
Even though the closing date is 5 February, don't make the assumption you can wait until then and simply send it in.
You have to go and buy the current October issue of the Australian Women’s Weekly (with the Irwin family on the cover – very sad). It's On sale now. Page 322 is the entry form for the competition. Prizes are up to $20,000 - plus the chance that your story will be read by the editors at Penguin.
I won't lie to you: it's tough competition - but you have to be in it to win it. If you think you need help with a creative writing course, Pamela Freeman (author of 18 books) is teaching creative writing at the Sydney Writers' Centre. The next five-week course starts Tuesday 17 October, which is great timing if you want to work on a piece for the short story competition.
Good luck!

I just wish you had online short courses at a reasonable price.

Hi Lisa,
We currently don't offer online courses but they are mere weeks away! The first seminar to go online will be Reinvent Yourself (So you want to be a writer ...)
Then in early 2007, Feature Writing for Magazines and Newspapers will also be offered as an online course.
